Woodburning for heat is a personal thing and every Woodburner develops their own style and methods.
With The Beaver Lever,
we do not stockpile kindling for the year!
We cut our kindling as needed from the
easiest pieces in our woodpile!
This is how we do it!

(Check out the photos below with descriptions.)

Picture
These are the firewood logs that I grabbed from the woodpile. Judging by the grain, I can get some kindling from the two on the right, but the log on the left I might just burn. You can see that the kindling box in the back on the left is full and I don't actually need to cut any, but I like to get a bit from the nicer pieces before I burn them.

Picture
The pile in front shows the kindling that I was able to split off from these pieces using The Beaver Lever Kindling Cutter. As suspected, the log on the left yielded nothing. The log in the middle split easily, so I took more from it. I split the easiest corner pieces from the log on the right.

Picture
Recently, I started collecting the splinters (shown on the left in the previous slide) that I am easily able to pull off. I store them on the mantle and use them to start fires when needed. When dry, they ignite like tinder.

Picture
This was the mess that I had to sweep up. It is mostly bark. It will go in the fire.

Picture
A few pieces go on the remaining bed of coals before I put a log on top. The rest of the kindling goes in the kindling box.

The fire is usually roaring before I put everything away.
